Gas Plant - 300t Column Erection using 250' Lift TowerThe Modular Lift Tower was employed by a local crane and rigging company to provide the erection of a third train main fractionation column at a West Texas Gas Plant. The 230' column was lifted using a 250' tall configuration of Barnhart's MLT that provided a completely open bay for lifting of the vessel using trunnions. The MLT was fully self supporting and stable without guys of any type.
The stability of the MLT is provided through moment connections in the "frame" of the tower configuration. The required configuration for this lift was modeled and analyzed using computer aided design tools and finite element analysis (FEA) to confirm design assumptions and performance.
The tower was erected using Barnhart's Demag CC2000 which was also used as the tail crane. The tower was erected in modular panels in about five days. The actual lift of the vessel took only five hours following several days of delay due to winds in excess of 60 mph.
The proprietary MLT system is designed for use in winds up to 70 mph and can be configured for more severe conditions including high wind loads and seismic performance.
