Barnhart Crane & Rigging Utilizes Modular Lift Tower at Construction Project in Alabama

(MEMPHIS, Tenn.) – Barnhart Crane & Rigging announces the utilization of its Modular Lift Tower at a power plant construction project Alabama. The Modular Lift Tower provides an economical alternative to heavy lift cranes during construction.

According to Jeff Latture, Barnhart’s vice president, heavy contracting, “The Modular Lift Tower was designed to be versatile; once it is on-site, it can be used in a variety of applications. For this project, the Modular Lift Tower was configured as a gantry and used to erect two Heat Recovery System Generator (HRSG) units consisting of fourteen 230-ton modules. Once these lifts were completed, the Modular Lift Tower was reconfigured to erect the 240-ton steam turbine generator.”

The three-phase power plant project is being constructed by the Southern Company. Each phase of the project is a power block consisting of a “2-on-1” combined cycle unit utilizing two GE F-class combustion turbine generator sets, two HRSG units (Vogt-NEM on phase I and Deltak on phase II) and a steam turbine unit (GE on phase I and Alstom on phase II).

“This project represents just one of nine projects Barnhart has been awarded by the Southern Company,” Latture said. “Each of these projects involved the use of Barnhart’s Modular Lift Tower to erect the steam generator, along with other specialized equipment to unload the heavy equipment arriving by rail, heavy haul to the site and erect on the foundations. In total, Barnhart has handled over 300 components for the Southern Company.

“Overall during the current power construction surge, Barnhart has transported and/or set over 400 turbine generator units and transformers, as well as provided various types of inland transportation for more than 1,000 HRSG modules via water and roadway,” Latture said.
