(MEMPHIS, Tenn.)—Barnhart Crane and Rigging Company’s recently opened Chicago project office was entrusted with the movement of the newest spare main power transformer for a nuclear power station.

Providing unique solutions to heavy lift and transportation problems, Memphis-based Barnhart Crane and Rigging specializes in difficult equipment transport.

Barnhart’s Chicago project and sales coordinator, John Boone, said, “Barnhart has worked continuously in the Chicago area over the past five years in the power and petrochemical segments, providing specialized services to the industrial community. Our first project following the establishment of our new Chicago office was the movement of the back-up transformer for the nuclear power facility.”

The 833,000-pound transformer, worth several million dollars, was purchased then transported inland by barge from New Orleans, La., to Barnhart’s heavy lift terminal in Memphis for loading of the transporter.

After being off-loaded from the deck barge by Barnhart Crane’s mutli-axle platform trailer, the transformer was then transported north and set on a temporary base at the nuclear plant. The transformer measured 11 ft. wide by 33 ft. tall by 17 ft. tall, and was one of the largest transformers ever handled by Barnhart Crane and Rigging.

The plant, after a recent uprate, has become a 912 MWe nuclear station, which provides 12.54 billion kWh in 2001 to Chicago and the northern quarter of Illinois.

According to the senior project manager at the plant, “There was a high degree of confidence in Barnhart Crane and Rigging from the start because of the depth and breadth of Barnhart’s equipment and expertise. Their management has a real professional knowledge of how to work on a nuclear site, preventing the logistics and technical aspects of moving the transformer from becoming a problem.”
