At Barnhart a great safety record is no accident. Safety is engineered into everything we do. More than just a program, we strive to make safe work part of our culture. Our emphases on training, SOP’s, craft certification, leadership audits and risk management have yielded significant results. In 2005 Barnhart's EMR reached a new low of 0.52 and our OSHA Incident Rate for heavy rigging and transport was also a low 0.51.
Recently Barnhart has been recognized by a variety of organizations for our outstanding performance in the area of safety.

In addition, the SC&RA also awarded Barnhart the Fleet Safety Improvement Award by showing a reduction in our accident frequency rate for miles traveled, compared to the previous year accident frequency rate.
• The 2005 AGC Safety Award – Recognition from the industry for employee safety as a specialty contractor. Entries were graded on industry standard measures such as the OSHA Injury Incident Rates and safe manhours worked. This award was given in recognition of accumulated safety results over the year.
• The Corp of Engineers Safety Award (Celebrate Safety) - Barnhart was nominated as a result of its safe execution of the replacement of the lower pool miter gates at Lock 17 on the Black Warrior river. The Corps nominated Barnhart for the award which was given through the Mobile District and highlighted in the Corps newsletter.
As part of our on-going dedication to improve in the area of Safety, Barnhart is also pleased to announce the hiring of Shane Pourciau as its new Safety Director.
