Barnhart moves massive MRI machine into new Le Bonheur building
Jun 7, 2010
MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Traffic came to a stop along Poplar Avenue Sunday morning as a crane crew lifted a new MRI machine into place at the new Le Bonheur Children's Hospital.
The crane from Barnhart Crane and Rigging was the centerpiece of a massive effort to move the 19,000 pound machine into Le Bonheur's new building. The device will make Le Bonheur the only children's hospital in the country that can perform an MRI while a patient is in surgery.
The new MRI machine and other equipment had to be lifted up to a large opening work crews cut into the second floor.
Last fall, the same crane picked up a product for Exxon-Mobil that weight 4.5 million pounds.
From putting the steel in Memphis' Pyramid Arena to giving a life to the space shuttle, The Barnhart company has gotten a lot of practice over the years.
David Sitton with Barnhart Crane and Rigging said it was all in a day's work.
"Whether it's a 15,000 pound sculpture or a 19,000 pound MRI, you are still going to have some real skilled people engineering involved with it," Sitton said. "You can't have any mistakes."
