Barnhart Saves the Day with Overnight Bridge Repair
Market: Heavy Civil
Location: Florida
Project Dates: 09/22/04 – 10/07/04
The Challenge
A truck carrying an excavator met a low bridge and created a traffic nightmare on a Florida interstate.
The Solution
The Barnhart crew shored-up the bridge with a gantry system while removing the damaged section.
The Description
Late one night on a Cocoa Beach interstate, a truck carrying an excavator ran into a low bridge and effectively led state officials to close the interstate for one night while urgent repairs could be made.
Officials called Barnhart in to help with this imperative over-night project. First, the team shored up the bridge with a gantry system while another team cut the damaged portion of the bridge into sections for removal.
After portioning the damaged bridge, Barnhart used a PSTe Goldhofer trailer – stacked with pipe stands and topped with beams – to lift and transport the damaged section to a staging area near the median for further dismantling.
